How Long Do Dermal Fillers Last?

Dermal filler results are not permanent, and how long they last depends on the filler type, the area treated, and your own metabolism. Here is what actually determines the timeline, area by area.

THE QUESTION

The Honest Timeline for Filler Longevity

Most hyaluronic acid dermal fillers last between six and eighteen months, though the exact timeline depends heavily on which filler is used, where it is placed, and how quickly your own body metabolizes it. There is no single number that applies to every patient or every area.

Thinner fillers used in delicate, expressive areas like the lips tend to break down faster, because those areas move constantly and have a rich blood supply. Denser fillers placed in the cheeks or jawline, where there is less movement, tend to last longer.

Individual results vary.

We give you an honest estimate for your specific filler and area at consultation, never a generic number pulled from a brochure.

BY TREATMENT AREA

How Long Filler Lasts, Area by Area

Typical ranges for hyaluronic acid filler. Your own result depends on the specific product used and your metabolism.

  1. 01

    Lips

Six to nine months typically. High movement and rich blood flow in the lips break down filler faster than any other facial area.

The shortest typical timeline of any area.

  2. 02

    Cheeks

Twelve to eighteen months typically. Denser filler placed deep against the bone moves less and metabolizes more slowly.

    Among the longest typical timelines.

  3. 03

    Jawline and Chin

Twelve to eighteen months typically. Structural filler placed for definition tends to hold shape similarly to the cheeks.

Firm structure supports a longer hold.

  4. 04

    Under Eyes

Nine to twelve months typically. A delicate area we treat conservatively, with results reviewed before any top up.

    A middle range, treated cautiously.

BEFORE YOU DECIDE

What Actually Changes the Timeline

Factors That Shorten It

  1. A faster metabolism. Exercise and higher activity levels tend to break down hyaluronic acid faster.
  2. High movement areas. The lips wear down filler more quickly than areas with less constant motion.
  3. Thinner formulations. Softer, thinner fillers are designed by their manufacturer to last a shorter time.

Factors That Extend It

  • Denser, more structural filler formulations placed deep against the bone.
  • Lower movement areas, such as the cheeks and jawline.
  • Good sun protection and general skin health, which support the surrounding tissue.

Maintenance is a top up, not a fresh treatment. Most returning patients need less product at a maintenance visit than at their first appointment.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Filler Longevity, Answered

Straight answers, the same ones you would get in the treatment room.

How long do lip fillers last?
Lip filler typically lasts six to nine months. The lips move constantly and have a rich blood supply, both of which break down hyaluronic acid faster than in other areas.

Do cheek fillers last longer than lip fillers?
Yes, typically. Cheek filler is often placed deeper against the bone in a lower movement area, and commonly lasts twelve to eighteen months compared to six to nine months for lips.

Does filler disappear all at once?
No. Hyaluronic acid filler breaks down gradually over months, not all at once. Most patients notice a slow, natural softening rather than a sudden change.

Can I speed up how long filler lasts, or make it last longer?
You cannot meaningfully extend filler beyond its natural range, but general health, sun protection, and avoiding excessive movement in the treated area can support a smoother fade. Individual results vary.

Do I need old filler removed before getting new filler?
No. Hyaluronic acid filler is gradually and naturally absorbed by the body. There is no need to have it removed before a new treatment, unless you specifically want it dissolved sooner with hyaluronidase.
