THE CONCERN
L Carnitine Gets Marketed as a Fat Burner. We Will Not Sell It That Way.
Search L carnitine and you will find it wrapped in weight loss language. The reasoning sounds tidy: carnitine moves fat into the part of the cell that burns it, therefore more carnitine burns more fat.
Biochemistry does not work as a syllogism. Carnitine is a transporter, and transport is only rate limiting when there is not enough of it. In a healthy adult eating an ordinary diet, the body makes its own carnitine and obtains more from food, so adding to it does not automatically speed anything up.
That is why you will not see a fat loss claim on this page. It is regulated territory in Canada, the evidence does not support the promise, and making it would tell you we are willing to say anything.
No urgency here.
If weight is your actual goal, an infusion is not the lever, and we will tell you that in the room.

Recently went for IV therapy after a bout of sickness. The clinic space is beautiful and Parveen was incredibly helpful. The treatment worked great too, I was feeling brand new the next day!
THE TREATMENT
What L Carnitine Is, and What It Does in the Cell
L carnitine is a compound derived from amino acids. Your body makes it in the liver and kidneys from lysine and methionine, and you take in more from food, with red meat the densest ordinary source.
Its job is transport. Long chain fatty acids cannot cross into the mitochondria on their own, and carnitine carries them in so they can be oxidised for energy. It also helps clear certain metabolic by products out of the mitochondria, which is the less discussed half of the role.
Clinical carnitine supplementation has a genuine place where a real deficiency exists, including some inherited metabolic disorders and certain circumstances in advanced kidney disease. Those are medical situations, diagnosed and managed as such.
For everyone else, it is offered here as one booster among several, added when your assessment supports a reason for it and left out when it does not. Most infusions run 30 to 60 minutes in our dedicated IV lounge, administered by a registered nurse under the clinical oversight of nurse practitioner Parveen Sangha.

BEFORE YOU DECIDE
What to Expect, and Who It Is For
What to Expect
- Consultation and assessment. A review of your health history, medications and goals, and a straight answer on whether L carnitine has a role in your plan.
- A written plan. The formulation and the full cost, confirmed before your line goes in.
- The infusion. 30 to 60 minutes seated in our dedicated IV lounge, monitored throughout by your registered nurse.
- Right after. Most patients return to their day immediately. Mild bruising at the site can occur and settles within days.
- Ongoing plan. Reviewed at each visit against a defined goal rather than continued by default.
Who It Is For, Honestly
L carnitine is discussed as part of a wider plan, most often with patients focused on training load and recovery who understand it supports normal metabolism rather than accelerating it.
- We will not present it as a weight loss treatment, because it is not one, and because that claim is not permitted for a product used this way in Canada.
- Tell us about kidney disease, thyroid medication, or a seizure disorder, since each changes the conversation.
- We do not treat during pregnancy without medical sign off.
If the honest answer is that it will not do much for you, that is the answer you will get.
COMMON QUESTIONS
L Carnitine Injection Questions, Answered
Straight answers, the same ones you would get in the treatment room.
- What does L carnitine do in the body?
- It transports long chain fatty acids into the mitochondria, the part of the cell where they are oxidised for energy, and helps clear certain metabolic by products back out. Your body produces it in the liver and kidneys and you also absorb it from food, particularly red meat.
- Does L carnitine burn fat or cause weight loss?
- We do not make that claim. Carnitine transports fat for use as fuel, but transport is only the bottleneck when carnitine is genuinely lacking, which is not the usual situation in a healthy adult. Marketing has run well ahead of the evidence here, and weight loss claims for injectables are tightly regulated in Canada for good reason.
- Who has a real carnitine deficiency?
- It occurs in certain inherited metabolic disorders, in some circumstances associated with advanced kidney disease and dialysis, and occasionally alongside particular medications. These are diagnosed medical conditions managed clinically, not something identified from symptoms alone.
- Is L carnitine safe?
- It is generally well tolerated at the amounts used clinically. It is still a substance with real biological activity, which is why it is added on assessment, with your medications and medical history considered, rather than offered as a default extra.
- Why is L carnitine given intravenously rather than taken orally?
- Oral absorption of supplemental carnitine is limited and a substantial proportion is metabolised by gut bacteria before it is taken up. An infusion avoids that, which is the same reasoning behind the other boosters, though it is not by itself a reason to have one.
- Who administers the infusion, and how long does it take?
- Your formulation is planned by our clinical team from your assessment, then administered by a registered nurse, under the clinical oversight of nurse practitioner Parveen Sangha, in our dedicated IV lounge. Most infusions run 30 to 60 minutes, seated and monitored throughout.
