THE SITUATION
Off the Ship at Nine, In the Chair by Two
Vancouver is a departure and arrival port, so a recurring version of this walks through the door: someone who has just come off a week at sea, or off a long haul flight, or back from somewhere hot and dry, and who feels flattened in a way that a night of sleep has not touched.
The reason is rarely mysterious. Cabin air on an aircraft runs at a humidity far below anything you live in, so you lose water steadily through your breath for the whole flight. Add the alcohol that travel tends to involve, which suppresses the hormone that tells your kidneys to hold onto water, add salty food, heat, and a sleep schedule shifted by several hours, and you arrive genuinely down on fluid and out of rhythm rather than simply tired.
The complication is time. People in this position are often here for two days, or the ship leaves tomorrow, or there is a wedding that evening. They do not have a week to feel human again.
No urgency here.
Feeling flattened after travel is not a mystery. It is usually fluid, alcohol and a broken sleep cycle, in that order.

Recently went for IV therapy after a bout of sickness. The clinic space is beautiful and Parveen was incredibly helpful. The treatment worked great too, I was feeling brand new the next day!
WHAT WE DID
What a Rehydration Drip Does, and What It Does Not
What it does well is volume. Oral fluid has to pass through your gut, and when you are meaningfully dehydrated that is both slower and less appealing than it sounds. An infusion puts fluid and electrolytes directly into circulation, which is why the effect on the flattened, heavy headed feeling of dehydration tends to be noticeable within the session rather than the following day.
What it does not do is reset your body clock. Jet lag is a circadian problem, not a hydration problem. Fluid will address the part of feeling terrible that comes from being dry, and it will do nothing at all about the fact that your internal clock thinks it is four in the morning. Light exposure, timing your sleep, and being patient are what fix that, and anyone selling a drip as a jet lag cure is overselling.
The assessment still happens, and it is not a formality. An extra litre of fluid is trivial for a healthy body and a real load on one with a significant heart or kidney condition. That is the main reason we decline, and travel urgency does not change it.

BEFORE YOU DECIDE
What to Expect, and Who It Is For
What the Appointment Looks Like
- Call ahead if the day is tight. Same day is often possible, and weekends are covered, but a call beats arriving hopeful.
- Medical assessment first. Health history, medications, and what your last few days have actually looked like.
- Fluid and electrolytes as the foundation. Anything beyond that is added because your assessment supports it, not because it was on a menu.
- You sit still for it. The session is a genuine sit down, reclined, looking at the water. Plan the afternoon around it rather than squeezing it between two things.
- Luggage is fine. People come straight from the terminal. Say so when you book so there is somewhere to put it.
Who This Applies To, and Who It Does Not
This suits healthy adults who are dehydrated after travel and want to feel functional today rather than in three days.
- It is not appropriate with significant heart or kidney conditions, where extra fluid volume is a genuine load rather than a benefit.
- It will not fix jet lag. If your only complaint is that you cannot sleep at the right hour, a drip is the wrong purchase.
- If you are unwell rather than depleted, with a fever or symptoms that are getting worse, that is a doctor, not a drip, and we will tell you so.
If water, salt and a proper night of sleep would do the same job, we will tell you that too.
COMMON QUESTIONS
Questions People Ask in This Situation
Straight answers, the same ones you would get in the treatment room.
- Why does flying dehydrate you so much?
- Aircraft cabin humidity typically sits far below what you are used to on the ground, often in single digit percentages, and you lose water continuously through your breath for the whole flight. On a long haul that adds up. The alcohol and coffee that go with travel make it worse, because both increase the amount of fluid your kidneys clear at exactly the moment you are taking less in.
- Will a drip cure my jet lag?
- No, and we will not tell you it will. Jet lag is your internal clock being in the wrong time zone, and fluid does not move a clock. What a drip addresses is the dehydration that travels alongside it, which is a real and separate part of feeling awful. Expect to feel less flattened. Do not expect to feel like it is the right time of day.
- How soon after landing or docking can I come?
- The same day is fine, and it is often the point. There is no waiting period after a flight or a cruise. If your schedule is tight, call rather than book online, because someone can tell you honestly whether the timing works.
- Is it worth it if I am only in Vancouver for two days?
- That depends on what you want from it. For dehydration after travel, the effect is felt in the same session and over the following day, so a short visit is not an argument against it. For anything that builds over weeks, a two day trip is the wrong time to start.
- Can I come straight from the airport with my bags?
- Yes, and people regularly do. Mention it when you book so there is space for luggage. The clinic is downtown, so it is a reasonable stop between the airport and a hotel rather than a detour across the city.
This is a composite. It describes a pattern we see often, assembled from more than one person so that no individual can be identified. No names, no images, and no personal details are used.
